Does he have any specific favorite films or books? My boyfriend is a huge star wars fan and there are loads of star wars related crafts out there, for instance :) might be a bit easier to narrow the search! I struggled a bit, but I did try and find you some tutorials.

and this tutorial is how to make a journal with the cover of a book. Maybe you could find a cheap copy of his favorite book and use that? Although I always find it a bit painful cutting up books! haha :

I struggled to find movie crafts which aren’t based on specific films. However I can remember seeing a photo frame where the photos took up spaces on a film reel, maybe you could try to make something like that? I can’t find a tutorial for it (I’m not even sure it was a tutorial I saw) but I thought it was quite a cool idea :) The best I could do was find a film reel picture for inspiration! haha:
